Sailing is dangerous. There’s just no getting around that fact. Whenever you go up against the elements, or throw yourself at the feet of the merciless ocean, or put your life in the hands of the temperamental whims of nature, you’re not guaranteed success. You have to survive, a word which implies self-preservation-instinct-motivated action. We learned this fact quickly on the voyage, even before we got out into the ocean. That’s what this chapter is about- the discovery that action, the choices you make in the face of an indifferent world, can either be your saving grace or your downfall.
